This photograph displays two Marines, Private First Class Rene Gagnon and Private First Class Ira Hayes, helping to raise the American flag on top of Mount Suribachi, the highest location on the small Pacific island of Iwo Jima during World War II. This historic moment was captured by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal and has gone on to become one of the most iconic and recognizable images of the war.
