Gemini 4 Astronaut Ed White became the first American to conduct a space walk on June 3, 1965 during the fourth Earth-orbiting mission of the Gemini program. White left the Gemini IV capsule and floated freely in space, tethered to the spacecraft, for almost twenty-three minutes.
