Dadaism was first founded during World War I in 1916, as a reaction to what was seen as the “meaningless carnage” of the conflict. Emphasizing principles such as irrationality, chance and anti-bourgeois culture, dadaists sought to challenge artistic conventions, create a sense of chaos and express their unique identities. This picture depicts the iconic imagery of artist Max Ernst’s “The Elephant of Celebes”, an expression of the artist’s subversive and anti-authoritarian beliefs.
