What background removal is actually doing

The AI looks at every pixel of your image and decides whether it's part of the foreground subject or the background. For obvious cases (a person against a clean studio backdrop, a product on a white surface) the decision is easy and the result is essentially perfect. For tricky cases — frizzy hair against a busy background, glass or fur with see-through edges, semi-transparent fabric — the model uses a refinement pass that estimates partial transparency at the boundary, so you don't get the cardboard-cutout halo that older tools leave behind.

Output is a PNG with a transparent alpha channel. You can drop it into any design tool (Photoshop, Figma, Canva, Affinity, GIMP) and treat it like a sticker. Or use our Background Replacer to drop a new scene behind it without re-doing the cutout.

How to remove the background — three steps

1. Drop your photo into the upload area. JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC all work. Best results on photos under 8 MP; larger images are downsampled before processing then resized back up.
2. Wait 2–5 seconds. Processing happens on our GPU cluster (this is a "heavy" tool — 3 credits per call vs 1 for resize/crop).
3. Download the transparent PNG. Filename gets a `_nobg` suffix so you can tell it apart from the original. The original isn't altered; we never touch your source.

What works well — and what doesn't

Excellent results: portraits, product shots on plain backgrounds, animals (especially cats and dogs), cars, plants, food. The model has been trained on millions of photos in these categories.

Decent results: photos with multiple subjects, photos taken in busy environments, group shots, photos where the subject is partly off-frame.

Tricky: transparent objects (glass, water bottles, eyewear) — the model can detect them but can't fully decide what to do with the area behind them. Cluttered backgrounds with subjects of similar colour. Very fine details like single strands of hair against a high-contrast pattern.

For solid-colour backgrounds where you want the cutout immediately on a brand-coloured backdrop, our White Background, Black Background, and other colour variants do the cutout + colour fill in one step.
