Process up to 200 images per job — pick your settings once, run them all.
When you need to keep a WebP's transparency intact AND open the file anywhere — design tools, older browsers, anywhere PNG works — convert to PNG. Lossless re-encoding, full alpha channel preserved. Drop the file, click convert, download. Free, no signup.
WebP to PNG vs WebP to JPG — picking the right path
The decision tree is short. If your image has transparency you need to keep (logos, icons, cutouts, illustrations on a transparent background), convert to PNG. If transparency doesn't matter and you want the smallest file possible, convert to JPG. PNG output is typically 2–5× the file size of the source WebP because PNG uses lossless compression while WebP is highly compressed.
If your goal is just universal compatibility and the image has no transparency, JPG is the better choice — see our WebP to JPG Converter. PNG only wins when transparency or pixel-perfect preservation is the requirement.
How to convert WebP to PNG
- Drop the WebP file (or up to 30 in one batch).
- Conversion runs in your browser via WebAssembly. The original isn't uploaded.
- Download the PNG. Transparency is preserved. EXIF metadata is carried over.
Output is a PNG-24 with full alpha channel. Use it as a layer in any design tool, or strip the background entirely with our AI Background Remover if you also want to redo the cutout.
What WebP-to-PNG preserves and what it can't
Preserved: every pixel value, full transparency (alpha channel), EXIF metadata, source colour space.
Not preserved: WebP's compression efficiency. PNG is lossless but uses much more disk than WebP. Animated WebP frames (multi-frame WebP files) — the converter outputs the first frame only.
Quality: PNG re-encoding is lossless, so the result has identical pixel values to the WebP source. Any visible artifacts in the PNG were already in the WebP.
Common workflows
Design assets. A logo your team has in WebP needs to be a PNG to drop into a Figma file. Convert and import.
Preparing for a CMS that doesn't accept WebP. WordPress < 5.8, older Drupal, custom CMSes — many still want PNG/JPG only. Convert before upload.
Photoshop / Affinity workflows. Older versions don't read WebP natively. PNG is universal.
For shrinking the resulting PNG, our PNG Compressor uses pngquant + zopfli to recover 30–50% of the file size lost to lossless encoding.
