Process up to 200 images per job — pick your settings once, run them all.
Drop a photo, pick a target aspect ratio (16:9, 1:1, 9:16, 4:3, ultrawide), and get back a cropped version with the subject perfectly centred. The AI detects faces, products, animals and other key subjects, then re-frames around them — so you don't end up with someone's head chopped off when you change from landscape to square.
Why smart crop matters
Repurposing a photo across formats is the daily reality of anyone publishing content. The 16:9 hero image you shot doesn't fit Instagram's 1:1 square. The portrait you took for LinkedIn doesn't work as a 9:16 story. Cropping by hand means trial-and-error to make sure the subject stays in-frame; smart crop does it in one click.
The model is trained to detect the most common attention anchors in photos — human faces, animal faces, large central products, prominent text, the rule-of-thirds focal point — and chooses a crop that preserves them. For images with multiple subjects, the algorithm prefers the largest or most central one; you can override the choice on Premium.
How to use smart crop
- Drop your photo. JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC. The model handles up to 25 MP on the free tier.
- Pick the target aspect ratio. Presets: 16:9 widescreen, 9:16 vertical, 1:1 square, 4:3 standard, 21:9 ultrawide, 3:4 portrait, 4:5 Instagram portrait. Or punch in a custom ratio.
- Confirm the suggested crop. The tool shows you the auto-detected subject and the proposed crop frame. Drag to adjust if needed.
- Download. Output is a JPG (or PNG if you started with PNG) at the new dimensions.
What it works well on, what it doesn't
Excellent: portraits, animal photos, sports shots, product photography, landscapes with a clear focal point, food photography.
Decent: group shots (the AI picks the largest or most central face), busy scenes (it picks whatever it detects most confidently).
Tricky: abstract photos with no clear subject, intentionally minimalist compositions, photos where the artistic intent is the empty space (the AI will crop AWAY the negative space because it doesn't recognise it as the point).
For those edge cases, use our regular Aspect Ratio Cropper instead — it gives you a manual frame to position yourself.
Common workflows
Social media kit from one photo. Take one source image, run smart crop at 1:1 (Instagram feed), 9:16 (Stories), 4:5 (Instagram portrait), 16:9 (Twitter, LinkedIn). Five outputs in 30 seconds. Or use the dedicated Social Media Template tool that does all of these in one batch.
Wallpaper from a portrait. A vertical portrait shot can be smart-cropped to 16:9 desktop wallpaper, then upscaled with our AI Upscaler if the result is below 4K. Or to 9:19.5 phone wallpaper without losing the subject.
Profile pictures. Smart crop to 1:1 to get a centered profile photo from any portrait source.
Frequently asked questions
How does it know what the subject is?
The AI is trained to recognise faces, animal faces, large central products, prominent text, and rule-of-thirds focal points. It picks whichever is most prominent in your specific image.
What if it picks the wrong subject?
Drag the suggested crop frame to adjust before downloading. Premium users can manually pick which detected subject to centre.
Will it crop too much?
It tries to preserve as much of the original frame as possible while hitting the target aspect ratio. If you want a tighter crop, drop into our regular Aspect Ratio Cropper.
Does it work on group photos?
Yes — it picks the largest or most central face. For specific control over which face stays in frame, drag the crop frame manually.
How many crops per day?
Anonymous: 1/day. Free signed-in: 5/day. Premium: 50/day. (Heavy tool — 3 credits per call.)
What aspect ratios does it support?
Presets for 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3, 21:9, 3:4, 4:5. Or any custom width:height ratio you type in.
Will it preserve quality?
Yes — the crop just discards pixels outside the frame; it doesn't resample or compress. Output dimensions match your chosen aspect ratio at the largest possible size that fits inside the source.
Can I batch smart-crop?
Not on the free tier. Premium API access supports batch.
