Process up to 200 images per job — pick your settings once, run them all.
Drop a colour photo, get a properly converted black-and-white version. Not the "remove saturation" trick (which gives muddy mid-tones), but a proper tonal conversion that maps colours through a luminance curve — the way a film B&W photographer would have shot it.
Why naive desaturation looks bad
Setting saturation to zero in any image editor blends RGB channels equally. Result: red and green of the same brightness become identical greys. But in real B&W film, red filters made skies dark and faces pale; orange filters did the opposite. The character of the conversion came from the channel mix.
This tool uses pre-set channel mixes that mimic classic film stocks (Tri-X, HP5, T-MAX) plus modern interpretations. Output looks like B&W photography rather than colour-with-saturation-removed.
Presets
- Classic: balanced, like Tri-X 400.
- High contrast: deep blacks, bright whites, dramatic skies.
- Vintage: softer, slight warm-toned highlights.
- Editorial: magazine-portrait look — crisp skin, neutral mid-tones.
- Infrared: bright foliage, dark sky — surreal, dreamy.
- Sepia (in our Sepia Filter): warm-toned monochrome.
Tips
- Run colour correction first. Off-balance colour photos give odd B&W tones. Use Color Correction first.
- Add film grain. Pure-clean B&W can feel digital. Subtle grain (toggle on) gives it more film character.
- Pair with vignette. Combine with our Vignette tool for a darkroom-print look.
