JPG to PNG Converter

Free, Lossless, with Transparency

Convert JPG photos to PNG with transparency support.

Drop an image or click to upload

Free to try.

PNG keeps every pixel exactly as it is and supports transparency — JPG does neither. Convert when you're about to edit the image further, when you need to layer it transparently, or when you just want a future-proof archival copy. Drop your JPG, pick PNG, download. No signup, no quality loss.

Why convert JPG to PNG at all?

The honest answer: a JPG is already lossy, so converting to PNG won't restore detail that's already been thrown away. What it WILL do is freeze the current quality so further saves don't degrade the image any more. JPG suffers from generational loss — every save chips away a little more detail. PNG never does. If you're going to re-edit the file in Photoshop, GIMP, Figma, or any design tool, convert to PNG first to lock in what you have.

The other reason is transparency. JPG has no alpha channel, so any "transparent" area gets baked-in to whatever background colour was beneath it. Once you convert to PNG, you can use our Background Remover to strip the background entirely — impossible to do cleanly in JPG.

How to convert JPG to PNG online

  1. Drop the JPG. Single file or batch. Free tier: 20 files/batch; Premium: 100.
  2. Conversion runs in your browser. No upload to our servers; the file decodes locally via WebAssembly and re-encodes as PNG.
  3. Download the PNG. Filename mirrors the original (photo.jpgphoto.png). EXIF metadata is preserved.

The output PNG will typically be 2–5× the file size of the source JPG — that's PNG's lossless compression doing its thing. If file size matters, convert to WebP instead for similar quality at much smaller size.

JPG to PNG vs other conversion paths

Use JPG to PNG when you want lossless preservation + future transparency support. Use PNG to JPG for the opposite (smaller files, no transparency needed). Use HEIC to JPG when working with iPhone photos. Use WebP to PNG when extracting from a modern web format.

If your real goal is just "make the photo editable in Photoshop", a TIFF is technically a better intermediate format than PNG (it preserves layers and supports more colour modes). PNG is better when the image will live on the web or in a modern design tool.

Common gotchas

Transparency doesn't appear automatically. Converting a JPG to PNG doesn't add transparency to the result — the background is still solid. To get real transparency you need to also run the PNG through a background remover.

EXIF data is preserved by default. If you're sharing the PNG publicly and the original had GPS coordinates, the PNG will too. Run our EXIF Stripper as a follow-up to scrub it.

The JPG's existing artifacts come along for the ride. If your source JPG was already heavily compressed and shows blocking or ringing, those artifacts are baked into the pixels — converting to PNG preserves them faithfully. Use our AI Sharpener or Photo Enhancer to clean them up.

Frequently asked questions

Will converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No — JPG already discarded some detail when it was first saved. Converting to PNG locks in the current quality but doesn't restore anything.

Why is the PNG file bigger than the JPG?

PNG is lossless, JPG is heavily compressed. Expect 2–5× growth in file size for typical photos.

Does the result have transparency?

No, not automatically. The background stays solid. To get a transparent PNG you need to also run it through our background remover.

Is conversion done client-side?

Yes — your file is decoded and re-encoded in your browser via WebAssembly. Never uploaded to our servers.

How many files per batch?

20 files in the free batch, 100 on Premium. Anonymous visitors get 1 free conversion per day.

Does it preserve metadata (date, GPS, camera)?

Yes — EXIF is carried over. Strip it with our EXIF Stripper if you'll share the result online.

What's the max file size?

100 MB per JPG on the free tier, 500 MB on Premium.

Can I convert PNG to JPG?

Yes — use our PNG to JPG Converter. The two tools are mirror images of each other.
