Why BMP files are so big

BMP stores every pixel as raw RGB data with no compression. A 1920×1080 BMP at 24-bit colour is 1920×1080×3 = ~6 MB. The same image as a quality-90 JPG is roughly 500 KB. The format dates from the original Windows era when storage was cheap and processors were slow — it traded file size for trivial decode performance.

Almost nothing today uses BMP. The format hangs around in legacy enterprise tools, scanning software that emits BMP for compatibility, and a few medical-imaging contexts. If you're handling BMPs, you almost certainly want to convert to JPG (for photos) or PNG (for graphics with sharp edges).

How to convert BMP to JPG

1. Drop your BMP file — single or batch up to 30.
2. Pick a quality. Default 90 is visually identical to the source for almost all content. Drop to 75 for thumbnails.
3. Download the JPG. Filename mirrors source.

BMP to JPG vs BMP to PNG

For photographic content, JPG always wins on file size — typically 90% reduction. For graphics with sharp edges (screenshots, icons, line art), JPG produces ringing artifacts at the boundaries; PNG is the right target for those.

Our converter chooses JPG by default since most BMPs in the wild are photographic. If your BMP is a screenshot or icon, switch the output format dropdown to PNG before converting.

Common BMP sources

Old Windows screenshots (Print Screen → Paint → Save), legacy scanner output, medical imaging exports, certain embedded-systems image dumps, very old digital cameras. None of these need to stay BMP for any modern purpose.
