Gladiator is a 2000 American epic historical drama film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Russell Crowe. Set in ancient Rome, the film tells the story of Maximus Decimus Meridius, a Roman general who rises to become Emperor Marcus Aurelius's favored and most successful general, before being betrayed and enslaved by Commodus, his ambitious adopted son.
