Brush over the photobomber, the trash can, the ex, the date stamp. The AI fills the area with whatever was probably behind it — sky, wall, grass, ocean — or whatever you describe instead. Free tier with no signup; photos stay private.
What inpaint actually does
Inpainting masks a region and asks a generative model to predict pixels that fit the surrounding context. Modern diffusion-based inpaint (what we use) is dramatically better than the old patch-clone tools — it understands that the missing patch is "between two trees" or "on the table next to the cup" and synthesises plausible content.
You can use it two ways. (1) Pure removal: brush, leave the prompt blank, AI fills with background. (2) Replacement: brush, type "potted fern" or "stack of books", AI puts that object in the masked area, lit and angled to match the scene.
How to inpaint a photo
- Upload your image. JPG, PNG, WebP. Max 25 MB; we downscale to 2048px on the long edge for speed.
- Brush over what to change. Drag to paint a mask. Brush size and softness adjust on the toolbar.
- (Optional) Type a replacement. Leave blank to remove, or describe what should be there.
- Generate. Usually 6–12 seconds. Re-roll if the first pass doesn't land.
When inpaint shines (and when it doesn't)
Best results: removing isolated objects (a sign in front of trees, a person on a beach, a power line in a sunset, a logo on a wall). Tricky: removing things that overlap a face or detailed pattern, or things that are really large relative to the frame. For full-on background swaps, use Replace Background — that's a different tool optimised for subject-vs-background separation.
If you only want background gone (not replaced), Remove Background handles that with one click and no brushing.

Frequently asked questions
Can I undo a brush stroke?
Yes — Cmd/Ctrl-Z. Eraser tool is on the toolbar to clean up edges.
What's a good brush size?
Start with the auto-sized brush; nudge larger to engulf the object plus a few pixels of surroundings. Too tight a mask leaves halos.
Why does the AI sometimes add weird artefacts?
Diffusion can hallucinate. Re-roll, or shrink the mask. Very large masked areas (>25% of image) are the hardest.
Can I remove text or watermarks?
Yes, for personal restoration of your own photos. Don't use it on copyrighted material you don't own.
Does it work on faces?
Inpainting around faces is tricky — slight changes can shift identity. For face fixes specifically, use our Face Enhancer.
What resolutions are supported?
Up to 2048px long edge. Larger uploads get downscaled. Premium gets 4K-friendly inpaint.
Can I batch process?
Inpaint is mask-driven so it's per-image. For object removal at scale, contact us about API access.
Are my photos private?
Yes — processed in isolation, deleted within 24 hours, never used for training.
