AI Outpaint

Extend Photos Beyond Their Frame

Extend any photo's canvas — turn portrait into landscape, square into 16:9.

Upload your image

Free to try.

Cropped too tight? Need a vertical phone wallpaper from a horizontal photo? Outpainting extends the frame — the AI imagines what would be just outside the original picture and paints it in, matching the lighting, perspective, and content of the source.

Why outpaint instead of crop or stretch

Cropping throws away pixels you might want back. Stretching distorts faces and proportions. Outpainting adds new pixels that look like they were always there. The model studies the edges of your image — sky on top, grass on the bottom, walls on the sides — and continues those textures and structures outward.

This is genuinely useful for: turning landscape photos into phone wallpapers (9:19.5), building widescreen banners (21:9) from square Instagram exports, fixing photos where someone got cropped at the elbow, or producing matching variants for multi-monitor setups (use with our Multi-Monitor Splitter).

How to outpaint

 1. Upload your photo.
 2. Pick a target aspect ratio. 16:9, 9:19.5 (phone), 1:1, 21:9, 3:4, or custom.
 3. Choose where to extend. Top, bottom, left, right, or all sides. The original stays untouched in the centre.
 4. (Optional) Describe what to add. "more sky", "ocean horizon", "city skyline" — or leave blank for the AI to guess.
 5. Generate. 8–15 seconds. Re-roll if the continuation feels off.

When it works best

Photos with clear, simple edges — sky, water, grass, walls, blurred backgrounds — extend almost perfectly. Photos cropped through a complex subject (faces, text, machinery) are harder; the AI has to invent rather than continue. For wallpaper resizing where you don't want generative content, use the Wallpaper Resizer instead — it crops smartly without inventing pixels.

Resolution and credits

Output resolution scales with the requested aspect ratio. Anonymous users get a daily quota; free accounts get more; premium gets bigger outputs and priority queue. Each generation costs credits since it runs on GPU.

Frequently asked questions

Will the original part of the photo change?

No — only the new outpainted area is generated. Your original pixels stay 1:1 in the centre of the new image.

Can I outpaint multiple times?

Yes, iteratively. Each pass adds more area. Quality holds best for one or two passes; further out the AI is guessing more.

What ratios are supported?

16:9, 9:19.5 (phone), 1:1, 21:9, 3:4, 4:5 (Instagram portrait), or custom width × height.

Can it extend a portrait into a full-body photo?

Sometimes — if the crop is at the chest, often yes. From the head it's much harder; the AI doesn't know your body.

Does it work on group photos?

Yes, but adding people on the sides is risky. Extending sky/background around an existing group works well.

What's the max resolution?

Up to 4K total (e.g. 3840×2160). Premium goes higher.

Are outpainted images mine?

Yes — outputs are yours to use commercially. Be aware that AI-generated portions may have different copyright treatment in some jurisdictions.

Can I outpaint and inpaint together?

Use them sequentially: outpaint first to get the canvas, then AI Inpaint to fix any details inside.
