GIF to MP4 Converter

Smaller Files, Smoother Playback

Convert animated GIFs to MP4 for smaller file size and better quality.

Drop an image or click to upload

Free to try.

A GIF that takes 8 MB plays in MP4 at 400 KB with better quality and smoother motion. Twitter, Reddit, and most modern platforms convert GIFs to MP4 server-side anyway. Convert ahead of time so the file is smaller from the start. Drag, convert, download.

Why GIF is a terrible video format

GIF was designed in 1987 for static graphics. The animated variant came later as an afterthought — limited to 256 colours, no audio, frame-by-frame storage with no inter-frame compression. The result is a format that produces enormous files for short clips. A 5-second screen recording at 480p easily hits 10 MB as GIF; the same clip is 500 KB as MP4.

MP4 (H.264 specifically) uses inter-frame prediction — each frame is encoded as a delta from the previous one, so static or slow-motion content compresses extremely well. Audio support is built in. Modern browsers, social platforms, video apps, messaging apps all play MP4 natively. The format hasn't substantially changed in two decades because it doesn't need to.

How to convert GIF to MP4

  1. Drop your GIF file. Up to 50 MB on the free tier.
  2. Choose H.264 settings. Default produces a balanced trade-off between file size and quality. Premium users can pick H.265 (HEVC) for further size reduction at the cost of broader compatibility.
  3. Wait 5–15 seconds while the encoder runs. Larger GIFs take longer.
  4. Download the MP4. Plays in any browser, any video app, any social platform.

What you gain and what you lose

Gain: 10–20× smaller files. Smoother motion (MP4 doesn't restrict frame rate the way GIF does). Better colour fidelity (24-bit vs 8-bit). Audio support (you can add a soundtrack to a silent clip with a video editor).

Lose: Auto-loop in some contexts (MP4 plays once by default; you can set loop in HTML or use the GIF in old contexts). Drag-and-drop to certain ancient apps (some legacy tools only accept GIF for animations). The "GIF aesthetic" — the pixelation and dithering that's part of the format's charm in some uses.

When to keep GIF instead

If your destination requires GIF specifically — Slack reactions still want GIF, some messaging platforms only embed GIF, certain decorative-loop use cases benefit from GIF's universal compatibility — keep it. Use our Batch Image Optimizer to at least reduce the GIF's file size with palette optimisation.

For converting individual frames out of a GIF (extracting stills), use our PDF to Image path or a video-frame extractor (coming soon).

Frequently asked questions

Will the MP4 play everywhere a GIF would?

Mostly yes — every modern browser, video app, messaging platform. A few legacy contexts (Slack reactions, some ancient embeds) still want GIF specifically.

Does the MP4 auto-loop?

Not by default. Set the HTML video tag's `loop` attribute, or use a video editor to embed the loop.

Can I add audio?

Not in this tool — but the resulting MP4 supports audio. Open in any video editor (DaVinci Resolve, iMovie, etc.) and add a soundtrack.

How much smaller will the file be?

10–20× typical. A 10 MB GIF usually lands at 500 KB–1 MB MP4.

Is the quality better?

Yes — MP4 uses 24-bit colour vs GIF's 256-colour palette. Gradients and skin tones look noticeably smoother.

Maximum input GIF size?

50 MB on the free tier, 250 MB on Premium. Heavy GIF files take longer to process.

How many conversions per day?

Anonymous: 1/day. Free signed-in: 5/day. Premium: 50/day. (Heavy tool — 3 credits per call.)

Can I convert MP4 back to GIF?

Not in this tool — coming soon. Use a video editor's export-to-GIF option meanwhile.
