Krampus strikes fear in the hearts of bad children during the Christmas season. This diverse figure is the Yorchschen, the demonic counterpart to Saint Nicholas. While Saint Nicholas rewards the good children with presents, Krampus strikes the bad children with a bundle of birch branches to punish them. This age-old tradition of punishing bad children during the holidays dates back to pre-Christian Alpine Europe.
