Manjiro Nakahama was a Japanese fisherman who made a historic voyage to the US in 1841 and became the first Japanese to study in the "West", and the first Japanese to return to his homeland after his studies were complete. He helped bridge two different worlds, and opened the door to US-Japanese "friendly relations".
