What EXIF contains
- Camera info: make, model, lens, settings (aperture, shutter, ISO).
- Timestamps: date and time the photo was taken (and potentially modified).
- GPS coordinates: latitude, longitude, altitude — exactly where the photo was taken. Yes, this can de-anonymise you.
- Software info: what software was used to edit.
- Embedded thumbnail: sometimes a small uncropped version is left in EXIF after a crop.
- Personal info: some cameras embed the owner's name and copyright field.
When to strip
- Before posting on forums or marketplaces. Reddit, Craigslist, eBay don't always strip GPS.
- Before sharing screenshots. Screenshots can include the system's user name and machine.

- Before sharing photos of children or homes. GPS in particular is a privacy risk.
