MacBook & iPad Wallpaper Guide

Retina scaling, dark-mode pairing, and the exact resolutions for every Apple display.

MacBooks and iPads are sneaky — the screen is one resolution, but macOS and iPadOS render at "logical" sizes that affect what wallpaper looks crisp. Here's the practical reference.

MacBook & iPad Wallpaper Guide

MacBook native resolutions

ModelNative pixelsDefault scaled
MacBook Pro 16" (M3)3456 × 22341728 × 1117
MacBook Pro 14" (M3)3024 × 19641512 × 982
MacBook Air 15"2880 × 18641440 × 932
MacBook Air 13" M32560 × 16641280 × 832

Always grab the native resolution wallpaper — the OS scales DOWN beautifully but UP looks soft. Browse our MacBook wallpapers for native-res ready images.

iPad native resolutions

iPadNative pixelsAspect
iPad Pro 13" (M4)2752 × 20644:3
iPad Pro 11" (M4)2420 × 16684:3
iPad Air 13"2732 × 20484:3
iPad Air 11"2360 × 16404:3
iPad mini2266 × 14884:3

iPads always rotate, so wallpapers need to look great in both portrait and landscape — favor centred subjects.

Dark-mode pairing

macOS and iPadOS auto-switch system colors with light/dark mode. Pick wallpapers with both a "light" and a "dark" version, or use a low-saturation neutral that works for both. Try the grayscale converter to preview how a wallpaper reads in dark mode.

External monitors

Connecting a MacBook to a 4K monitor? Use a separate wallpaper for each display. The built-in display gets the high-DPI version; the external can be lower res. Use the dual-monitor splitter to span one wide image across both.

iPad widget zones

iPadOS lock screen widgets occupy the left third of the screen by default. Avoid placing your subject in that zone. Crop using our cropper to ensure the focal point is right of centre.
