How background replacement works
Two-step process behind one click. First, the AI segments the foreground subject from the original background using the same engine as our Background Remover. Then it composites that subject over your chosen new background, with edge feathering to make the transition look natural rather than cardboard-cutout. The whole pipeline takes 4–8 seconds end to end.
Lighting compatibility is the key to a believable result. If the original photo was shot with warm afternoon light and you drop it on a cool studio backdrop, the eye notices. The tool can't fix the underlying lighting mismatch — that's an artistic decision, not an algorithmic one. Pick backgrounds that roughly match your source's lighting direction and warmth for the most natural result.
How to replace a background

Tips for a natural-looking replacement
Match the lighting direction. If the original photo was lit from the right, pick a background with lighting from the right. Mismatch is the most common giveaway.
Match colour temperature. Warm photo → warm background, cool photo → cool background. Our preset scenes are tagged by warmth so you can filter quickly.
Pay attention to edges. Hair edges look more natural over busy backgrounds (bokeh, foliage) than over clean colour. The AI's edge feathering helps but can't fully hide a colour mismatch at the boundary.
Keep the original. Background replacement is destructive — once you commit, the new background bakes into the JPG. Save the original separately if you might want to try a different background later.
